Walkathon from Montreal to Hampton

Over the summer of 2009 "The Town Chiropractor", Dr. Erik Klein, BSc, D.C., organized a walkathon involving 12 teams of 5 people each with the goal of walking the cumulative distance from Montreal, QC to Hampton, NB. Using pedometers he calculated the km's from the activity each team was able to record. It has been a tremendous success including media coverage and a high presence in the community. The team that completed the task first received a $500 donation to the non-profit organization of their choice. Team captains sent their team numbers in weekly and he calculated the figures and actually created maps showing exactly where on the highway each team would be. The rate of attrition even following the first team finishing was very very low.

This activity enabled Dr. Klein to promote chiropractic in the community and gave him a chance to introduce the profession to those who may have had reservations about it.

Well Done, Dr. Klein!

Unleash Your Potential Team Passes through NB

The “Unleash Your Potential” cycling team from CMCC passed through New Brunswick during the early days of August (5-11, 2009) on their way to Nova Scotia.

Unleash Your Potential is a national health awareness campaign geared towards motivating Canadians to live healthier and happier lives by adopting a wellness-based lifestyle.

From June to August, 4 students from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) were cycling across Canada to promote this message in person.  The team’s goal was to promote the integration of physical activity, proper nutrition, and stress management into the daily lives of Canadians.  Due to the current rise in obesity and associated lifestyle diseases, the team’s focus was on youth camps.  They planned to present interactive information to youth regarding healthy living to encourage healthy habits at a young age and in turn create a healthier generation for the future.  In addition to health promotion, this tour was an opportunity to inform Canadians about the benefits of chiropractic care and its role in attaining a balanced lifestyle.

The team was hosted in Woodstock by Dr. Simon Clark, in Fredericton by Dr. Rob Allaby, in Saint John by Drs. David and Elizabeth Forgie, and in Moncton by Dr. Todd Clayton. While in Fredericton, they were welcomed by the City Councilor and Community Services chairperson Mr. David Kelly, The Assistant Manager of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Mr. Geoff Gallant (who provided complimentary accommodation), Dr. Rob Allaby , and NBCA's Executive Director Dr. Mohamed El-Bayoumi.

While in Fredericton, the team visited the Farmer’s Market, enjoyed long walks on the greens and a nice boat ride on the St. John River. The team's picture appeared in the Daily Gleanr and they felt truly welcomed in NB and considered their stop the highlight of their trip.

Jays Pitcher on Chiropractic

At the age of 29, Scott Richmond posted his first bi-league win on September 26, 2008 in Baltimore.  In five starts with the Jays, he posted a 3-1 record with an earned-run average of 4.00. In 27 innings, he struck out 20 and walked just two.

The right-handed hurler points out that his body and arm are young.  He attributes that to his father, Dr. Bob Richmond, a chiropractor in Sussex, NB.  Read the full article published on Sat Oct 4, 2008 in the Telegraph Journal here.
